THE FIRST LAW OF NATURE IS SELF-PRESERVATION. CUT OFF THAT WHICH MAY HARM YOU. BUT IF IT IS WORTH PRESERVING, AND IS MEANINGFUL, NOURISH IT AND HAVE NO REGRETS.

July 2017 - How are you NOURISHing Yourself this Summer?

The third phase in our year-long Transformational Wellness program, NOURISH, combines nutrition and mindfulness techniques that will encourage your employees to care for their bodies so they stand ready to take on their next challenge. We often think of nourishment as healthy eating, yet holistic nourishment includes the body, mind, and soul.

When you nourish your body you give it the fuel it needs not just to keep going, but to strengthen and grow. When you nourish your mind, you build the skills and capacity to extend your reach to loftier goals. And when you nourish your soul, you gain that sense of calm that makes you realize you have the strength to take on the world.

The concept of nourishing yourself can be very individualized and personal, so this quarter, the HPMI team would like to share what NOURISH means to us.

Enjoy!

Lisa Bailey, CEO & President

My husband and I continue to nourish our relationship (and our bodies) around the kitchen island and through our nightly summer badminton games. We chop, we blend, we marinate, we grill, and, lately, we spiralize! Because I am both gluten and dairy free and we like to entertain, we get adventurous in what we make. My current favorite dish to share is Tangled Thai Salad. The combination of ingredients (spiralized veggies and basil) is unique and delicious, the dressing to die for, and the presentation outstanding. Check this out if you want to nourish your friends and family this summer!

Rather than following a checklist, like work out 5x a week, sleep 8 hours, eat healthily, etc., this summer I chose to focus on what truly renews my mind and body—slowing down and getting back to the basics. As the mom of twin 12-year-old active, loud, and lively boys, I made my #1 priority to start each morning peacefully. My first project was to stain our pergola and paint the patio furniture, so I would have a nice place to watch the rising sun each morning and center myself. I am amazed at how much extra energy and patience this peaceful morning routine brings.

Kristina Hamilton, Account Manager

At the beginning of the summer, my husband and I decided to start an exercise routine that we could do together. We bought two stationary bikes and hung a TV on the wall in front of them. After work, we don our exercise clothes, jump on the bikes, and watch our favorite shows on Netflix. Neither of us realized just how fun this would be! Not only are we getting our physical exercise but we talk and laugh and just have a good time. Now we really look forward to our workout at the end of the day.

Joann Butler, Client Services Coordinator

When it started getting lighter earlier, I decided to start my mornings with a long walk. At first I had to drag myself out of bed and force myself to go, but soon it became one of my favorite parts of the day. It is my time to think, listen to music, and enjoy nature. I haven't missed a day since the end of May! When I get back, I whip up a green smoothie, with some combination of juice, water, fruit, and two big handfuls of "power greens" (spinach, chard, and kale). By 8am, I have nourished my body, mind, and soul!

Dana Cernak, Director of Customer Experience

Nourishment to me means anything outdoors, and now that it is lighter later, we can enjoy it even more. We are an outdoorsy family and bond over camping, hiking, and playing volleyball in the sand volleyball court we built in our backyard. Summer is horse racing season for me, and often my husband, son, and daughter join me to enjoy the beautiful outdoors and mountain bike and hike while I race. On “off” weekends, we sometimes sign up for fun activities like endurance races. This nurtures our bodies, our passions, and our family relationship, all at the same time!

NEW ADDITION: GET OUT OF THE BOX AND GET COOKING!

HPMI has partnered with healthy cooking guru Mary Collette Rogers to introduce a worksite wellness program that is also great for teambuilding. Mary brings her portable kitchen to teach cooking skeptics and veterans alike foundational tips and tricks and simple meal-making techniques that transform the activity of cooking into a simple, exciting, and enjoyable experience. Once participants become excited, their healthy eating journey becomes self-sustaining because it is engaging, interesting, delicious--and fun. Ultimately, excitement at the individual level helps create and sustain a new culture in an organization and group, where cooking is a natural, stress-releasing, enjoyable part of the day. And sustainable habit building is what we’re all about at HPMI!

2017 Challenge Spotlight: Let's Do Lunch

Do you often feel sluggish in the afternoon? A healthy lunch gives you the fuel you need to power through the day, both mentally and physically. In many countries, lunch is the main meal, but for the American workforce, it often becomes an afterthought—and our bodies and minds pay the price. Over the course of 4 weeks, we cumulatively build 4 healthy lunch habits that make afternoons more productive—and bodies feel rejuvenated!

"It was easy and helpful at the same time - especially with the use of the Stop and Go book - and by the end I had incorporated three more healthy habits (I already only drink water or green tea).”
