"HPMI TAKES THE TIME TO GET TO KNOW US AS THEIR CUSTOMER. THIS GOES A LONG WAY IN ADMINISTERING A PROGRAM THAT SPECIFICALLY MAKES SENSE TO US. HPMI IS NOT A ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL VENDOR. THEY LISTEN AND CURTAIL WELLNESS TO THE CLIENT, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND."

April 2017 - MOVEing Your Wellness Program Forward

It’s springtime in the Rockies… are you excited to get outside and MOVE? In this issue of HPMI e-News, I’ll share how I keep from falling prey to the sitting disease, tell you a little more about HPMI’s Transformational Wellness Program and this quarter’s focus on MOVE, introduce our new financial wellness offering, and spotlight our Get Up, Get Moving Challenge.

~Lisa Bailey, CEO

Lisa Bailey, CEO & President

I got turned on to fitness in college when I started running, followed by a 30+ year passion with strength training. I’m hooked on the “muscle” feeling when I exercise and how it keeps me level-headed and lean. Yet even active people can fall prey to the sitting disease, and research shows that prolonged sitting is the new smoking—it’s that detrimental to your health. Here are some ways that I keep moving.

With warmer and longer days, I’m back to riding my pedal-assist bike to and from work (that’s me in the picture!). I pedal the whole way with a perma-grin! The view is amazing and I can take it easy going to work so I don’t get sweaty and then amp it up when riding home. I’m reducing my carbon footprint, enjoying nature, and getting my daily dose of exercise. The benefits of riding a pedelec (pedal electric cycle) for those in shape or those more sedentary were demonstrated by a recent study at the University of Colorado.

Over the last few years, I have introduced high intensity interval training (HIIT) to my fitness routine, and I do my workouts in my basement. The research on HIIT workouts is significant, and a recent study published in the New York Times underscored the benefits as we age.

And finally – because I need the ying and the yang, I practice yoga. I’m convinced that yoga, along with my standing desk, have kept my hips and my back happy and flexible. Like most of you, I spend a lot of time in front a computer. What works for me is to MOVE throughout the day, and it just so happens that MOVE is HPMI’s focus for the next three months! Check out more MOVE resources in the right column of this newsletter!

MOVE

The only way to get from point A to point B is to move.  The second phase in our year-long Transformational Wellness program, MOVE, is designed to move your employees to make healthy choices in their daily lives. Our strategy includes fun challenges like Get Up, Get Moving as well as introducing activities that promote movement throughout the day, an important component of healthy living.  And, we integrate over 100 apps and devices into our wellness portal to help participants stay on track and motivated!

New Addition: Financial Wellness

“Regardless of income, 70% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.” -The Wall Street Journal

Money issues not only impact personal health and happiness, they can lead to lack of attention, difficulty concentrating, and poor productivity in the workplace as well. That is why HPMI has added Financial Wellness to our scope of services. As your employees prosper, so does your organization! Our financial wellness seminars can be hosted on or offsite, and encompass important fundamentals like:
  • Savings plans for unanticipated expenses
  • Credit card independence and debt retirement
  • Work/life balance, with daily peace of mind and regular vacation savings
  • Milestone savings for college, weddings, and retirement
  • Protection against fraud and credit events
“After attending the money management class, I had a different perspective on my savings.  I knew I should be saving money but it was easy to dip into that bucket if something came up. I realized I had never assigned a purpose to my savings. So now, when I want to do something and I don’t have the funds, I’m not as tempted to pull from my savings because that money is dedicated to something purposeful in the future."

2017 Challenge Spotlight: Get Up Get Moving

We sit while we work, sit while we drive and sit while we relax. In the "Get Up, Get Moving!" Challenge, participants learn how to incorporate short bouts of activity into their daily routine to combat the detrimental effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

"I stand up and move around much more at work than I had before. I'm talking to others more, we move in meetings and I have a greater sense of team.”
